Wooden furniture, made by TimWith so many trees blighted and dying from disease today it is quite reassuring that some live on as carvings to remind us of what a wonderful material it is. "I was asked to take a look at some tables in need of repair at The Lost Kitchen in Chettiscombe. The joints had parted and the varnish surface was delaminating. Once back at the Hill workshop they were gently taken apart and the varnish and old glue removed. After reassembly the tops were sanded to a fine finish before a mixture of tung oil and danish oil were applied. That is the best bit when you see the grain "pop" where the oak was split a mahogany bow tie stitch was inserted to prevent further movement. I think you will agree they look stunning. Visit the Lost Kitchen and enjoy the fabulous food...and the tables of course!" - Tim Viking chairs or sometimes known as star gazing chairs. These striking looking seats come from salvaged scaffold planks and given a new life after much cleaning and de-nailing. They are then sanded and scorched with a hot flame using a japanese technique known as Shu Sugi Ban which lifts the grain. A final coat of varnish or wax is applied. The seats are easily pulled apart to flat pack and transport. Great for the beach, picnics or star gazing of course! From the left, Tim's take on a Magic Mushroom carved out of Ash. Two viking seats from a reclaimed worktop. A twisted stool carved from a piece of Monkey Puzzle. A scaffold viking chair and finally a apple core carved from Ash, the pips and stem are carved from Mahogany. "I use fallen timber for my carvings and particularly ash trees that have been felled due to 'Ash dieback' I like to think of it as 'Ash comeback'!"
